SAINT-GOBAIN: Glass balustrade on the Skywalk in the Grand Canyon made of laminated safety glass
SAINT-GOBAIN produces laminated safety glass for the glass balustrade on the Skywalk in the Grand Canyon. The complex glass processing was carried out with an EnviroFALK water treatment system.
A curved glass balustrade made of laminated safety glass runs along the inner and outer edges of the platform for a length of 100 meters and ensures the greatest possible fall protection. The 170 m² of glass installed there is made up of 49 panes, 28 of which are curved and 21 straight, and consists of a particularly transparent and color-neutral laminated safety glass. The special low-iron oxide glass is so transparent that the color palette of the rock faces is not distorted. The floor of the steel and glass construction consists of a total of 46 glass elements made of laminated safety glass.

Customer challenge
Consistently high water quality for processing laminated safety glass with a total of five intermediate layers.
The total of 147 m² of laminated safety glass is bonded in five layers with a special film, the so-called intermediate layers, and meets the highest safety requirements.
The glass layers must be cleaned with treated water before joining.
SAINT-GOBAIN relied on EnviroFALK process water technology for the complex glass processing. Ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis ensure optimum water quality for processing after grinding and drilling. A special combination of reverse osmosis, ion exchange, optimized circulation and UV disinfection provides purified water for a brilliant view before the five layers of glass are joined together.
