Ultrapure water, the basis for precision in the processing of medical materials
For processing medical sponge materials, water of the highest quality is essential: ultrapure water, also known as purified water (PW), meeting the stringent requirements of the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.). This is precisely where EnviroFALK comes in. The company stands for innovative concepts in water treatment, ranging from standardized compact systems to customized water treatment plants for hygienically perfect, standards-compliant water.
Growth requires new solutions for water treatment.
Since its founding in 2020, the QUESTALPHA team has more than doubled in size to over 50 employees. Sales have shown average double-digit growth rates per year since the company’s inception. For Dr. Sebastian Breuer, the current situation presents both an opportunity and a challenge: “Our current location is reaching its limits. Ultrapure water is essential for our production processes. To ensure we can continue producing safely and reliably, we need solutions that can keep pace with our growth.”
A new building is scheduled for completion in two years. It will provide significantly more space for modern production facilities, expanded automation, as well as laboratories, cleanrooms, and areas for research and manufacturing. With the continuous expansion of production capacities, the demand for ultrapure water is also increasing considerably.
The capacity of the existing water treatment plant and the tank volume of the current storage facilities are no longer sufficient for short-term growth. Therefore, the new water treatment plant had to meet several requirements: significantly higher performance, a compact design, and absolute future-proofing. Furthermore, a later relocation of the water treatment system to the new production facility had to be possible without any effort. To achieve maximum cost efficiency and sustainable resource use, it was crucial to integrate existing components such as storage tanks and pumping stations into the new concept.

The role of ultrapure water: From natural material to medical sponge and application components
The raw material for medical sponge and application components consists of natural cotton and regenerated cellulose from roll or sheet material. Before further processing, thorough cleaning with ultrapure water is required. The materials are either cleaned in ultrapure water or washed in special washing machines supplied with purified water.
Why is this so important? Cleaning reduces water-soluble components and impurities in the raw material. The quality of the water used directly influences the purity and therefore the safety of the final product, which is later used in sensitive medical applications.
Strict regulations apply to these processes: The water must meet the requirements of the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) for Purified Water (PW). This includes clear limits such as: conductivity: < 4.3 µS/cm, microbial count: < 100 CFU/ml.
In modern medical technology, precision and absolute purity are indispensable. For decades, QUESTALPHA has been developing highly specialized sponge materials used worldwide in sensitive areas such as diagnostics, wound care, hospital hygiene, and microsurgical procedures.
Products like Sugi® eye spears, Sugi® absorbent strips, and application rings are precisely engineered components: They reliably retain fluids, enable controlled absorption, and support processes where molecular binding and separation are crucial.
Tailor-made water treatment for the production of tomorrow
Limited space and demanding requirements. A challenge for the experts at EnviroFALK. The new water treatment plant had to be not only powerful and compact, but also future-proof and flexible enough for a later relocation to the new production building.
“We had to develop a solution that met all these criteria,” explains Sascha Reßmann, Sales Manager at EnviroFALK. “Performance, flexibility, and a modular design were key.”
The result: A customized water treatment plant characterized by its minimal footprint. All process technologies are installed on sturdy frame structures, enabling seamless relocation.
With this solution, EnviroFALK not only meets the stringent requirements for ultrapure water, but also lays the foundation for sustainable resource management and cost efficiency.

Partnership „Made in Germany“
Medical precision components are manufactured from natural materials. The necessary purity, quality, and process reliability are ensured through the use of treated water.
Well thought out: Water treatment for safe processes
The water treatment process begins with double softening and precise residual hardness control to reliably prevent limescale buildup and ensure consistent water quality. Additionally, integrated chlorine electrolysis provides hygienic safety without the need for any additional chemicals.
Water treatment meets safety
Thanks to reverse osmosis with integrated electrodeionization, over 98% of salts and more than 99% of germs are removed in the next step. An automatic emergency supply also guarantees uninterrupted water treatment, even during maintenance or malfunctions.
High standards for ultrapure water
The water treatment process meets the stringent requirements of the European Pharmacopoeia for purified water. This includes guaranteed limits such as a conductivity of less than 4.3 µS/cm and a bacterial count of less than 100 CFU/ml.
Maximum transparency regarding the purified water quality
All quality parameters are monitored fully automatically, including conductivity measurement with target values down to 0.5 µS. A single-function controller documents all operating data over a period of up to 12 months, ideal for audits and compliance.
Where precision begins and trust counts

Products like Sugi® eye spears, suction strips, and precise application rings determine clear vision, successful diagnoses, and safe treatments every day. And that’s worldwide.
Maximum transparency regarding the purified water quality

Efficiency meets flexibility
The modular design on compact frame structures allows for future relocation to new production areas. At the same time, existing components such as storage tanks and pumping stations were integrated to reduce investment costs and utilize resources efficiently. Optimized processes significantly lower water and energy consumption. Furthermore, the intelligent plant technology ensures maximum availability and a long service life for the production systems.
A partnership with a future
The collaboration between QUESTALPHA and EnviroFALK exemplifies how technological expertise and flexibility go hand in hand to create safe, efficient, and sustainable production processes.
The new water treatment plant impresses with its high performance, resource-saving technology, and compact design, while also being ready for tomorrow’s demands. Water treatment technology that combines technological precision with collaborative partnership. This perfectly reflects QUESTALPHA’s philosophy: “QUEST” represents the search for new solutions, and “ALPHA” represents the pursuit of excellence.
FAQ
Purified water (PW) is crucial for the production of medical sponge materials and application components. It prevents contamination, reduces water-soluble components in the raw material, and ensures the hygienic quality of products that are later used in sensitive areas such as diagnostics, wound care, or microsurgical procedures.
Purified water must meet the following limits:
- Conductivity: < 4.3 µS/cm
- Ceregiate count: < 100 CFU/ml
These specifications guarantee the highest purity for processing medical materials.
EnviroFALK develops customized water treatment systems. From compact units to fully integrated systems for standards-compliant, hygienically perfect ultrapure water. The water treatment systems are powerful, compact, and modular in design.
As production capacities increase, so does the demand for ultrapure water. Existing systems, tank volumes, or pumping stations are often no longer sufficient. A new water treatment system must therefore meet the following requirements:
