Using nanofiltration to reliably retain particles in the nanoscale range
Nanofiltration (NF for short) is a membrane technology that primarily retains divalent ions and larger molecules. It owes its name to its retention capacity, which is around one nanometer. It is used in particular for partial softening and reducing turbidity and coloration in surface water. This makes it ideal as an upstream treatment in process water production.
Another fact worth knowing is that it is similar to reverse osmosis in terms of both structure and function, although the retention rates are significantly lower with nanofiltration. However, it also uses a low water pressure, which is why this technology is often referred to as “low-pressure reverse osmosis”.
