Fully demineralized water for a wide range of applications

The term DI water stands for deionized water, i.e. deionized or demineralized water. In colloquial German, the term demineralized water or demineralized water for short is often used.

A DI Water System is used for the treatment of demineralized water for industrial applications. DI Water is also required for applications in laboratory, hospital and medical technology.

In a so-called DI Water Treatment Plant, surface or well water is often treated during large industrial peaks in demand for demineralized water.

But how does the treatment of DI Water actually take place? Drinking water contains salts in varying concentrations, which are made up of metal ions (cations) and an acid residue (anions). In order to remove both cations and anions, special ion exchange resins are added to the water in the DI Water System. A cation exchanger selectively binds cations such as sodium ions, calcium ions and potassium ions and releases H+ ions into the water. In contrast, an anion exchanger selectively binds anions, for example sulphate ions and chloride ions, and releases OH ions into the water. The result of this exchange is almost pure H2O – i.e. fully demineralized water.
