Decarbonization
Putting an end to carbonate hardness
The purpose of decarbonization is to remove the hydrogen carbonates of calcium and magnesium dissolved in the water, the carbonate hardness.
Decarbonization systems have weakly acidic ion exchange resins in the H form. Cations, calcium and magnesium are bound to the exchange mass, the hydrogen carbonate anion is converted into carbonic acid. The carbon dioxide (CO2) produced during the decomposition of the carbonic acid can be expelled from the water with air in a downstream trickle degasser. The exhausted exchanger mass is regenerated with hydrochloric acid.
